Dr. Pullolickal Thomas Iype was born in Kottayam,India. He obtained his B.Sc. from Madras Christian College and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Baroda in India. He was awarded the Doctor of Science degree by the University of Manchester in England. In 1965, he came to the United States as a Damon Runyon Fellow for his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin – Madison where he studied chemical carcinogenesis. Dr. Iype then became a Principal Investigator at Christie Hospital in Manchester, England where he did fundamental research in cell biology. In 1977, he returned to the United States as the Head of the Cellular Aspects of Carcinogenesis Section at the NCI-Frederick Cancer Research Facility in Frederick, Maryland. He published numerous papers in top scientific journals. Dr. Iype was a member of the editorial board of the journal Carcinogenesis, a member of NIH Special Study Sections, and a member of numerous international scientific professional societies.
In 1985, Dr. Iype founded a biotechnology company in Maryland called BRFF where he was the President and Program Director. BRFF specialized in cancer research funded by government grants. In addition, BRFF was awarded many contracts by NCI, NIEHS, DOD, and commercial sources.
Dr. Iype enjoyed traveling to many countries with his wife Rebecca. He was a member of the United Methodist Church for over 40 years and also attended Indian Orthodox Churches in the greater Washington area.
Dr. Iype is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and his children (Susan Cook and husband John Cook, Lisa Iype and husband Varugis Kurien, Peter Iype and wife Dawn Iype), and grandchildren (Sean Cook, Rebecca Cook, Kiran Kurien, Philip Iype, and Andrew Iype).
The viewing will be held at DeVol Funeral Home (10 East Deer Park Dr., Gaithersburg, MD, Tel. (301) 948-6800, www.devolfuneralhome.com) on Friday October 11 from 6 to 7:30pm.
The funeral service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church (119 North Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD, Tel. (301) 926-8688) on Saturday October 12 at 10am.
After the funeral service, the burial will be held at All Souls Cemetery (11401 Brink Road, Germantown, MD, Tel. (301) 428-1995).
