Bridget Bernadette Crehan, known to all as “Bernadette”, passed away on Sunday May 26, 2019 of complications related to Alzheimer's disease. She was 76. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Donald, her daughter Ann, and her son Colin, together with his wife Amy and their sons Jack and Cole. She is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Derby.
She was born in the small coastal town of Ballycastle, County Mayo, Ireland. Her father died when she was 2 years old and the family was raised by her mother who was a trained seamstress. Bernadette attended a local commercial high school learning skills of typing, stenography and bookkeeping.
At 17 she moved to London and worked for a bank. Eighteen months later she joined her sister and other family members in New York. She worked at PanAm in a clerical capacity. During that time she met and married Don Crehan.
Shortly thereafter they moved to Washington, DC, where their son Colin was born. She felt strongly about staying home with the children in their early years. A few years later their daughter Ann was born and Bernadette continued to focus on her role as a mother. She was a very accomplished seamstress, following in her mother’s footsteps. She made many clothes for the children when they were young, as well as for herself.
When Ann started school, Bernadette rejoined the workforce, first at Marriott Headquarters and then at IBM doing various statistical work and compiling reports. Later she did the same type of work at the US Dept of Energy for 10 years.
After retiring at age 65, she and Don did some traveling and home remodeling. But just a couple of years into retirement she was diagnosed with early signs of dementia. It progressed very slowly and they had another 5 years together before needing to go into a memory care facility. All through this she demonstrated quite a positive attitude and worked to get the most out of what time she had. Her buoyant personality made her much-loved by staff at the memory care facility and continued long after her memory had gone.
Her monument is the wonderful family she built and leaves behind. She will be missed beyond words. But her happy face will be in our minds and hearts forever.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 15 at 11:00 am at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, 1513 Dunster Rd, Rockville, MD 20854 .
Followed by a buffet luncheon at Normandie Farm Restaurant at 10710 Falls Rd, Potomac, MD 20854 after the service.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the memory care facility that cared for Bernadette for over 5 years. Here is a link to their donation web page: http://www.foresthillsdc.org/donate.html
