THE REVEREND MR. EARL W. SULMONETTI
Earl Sulmonetti passed peacefully on May 5, 2019 at 88 years of age, in Gaithersburg, MD. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Juanita Virginia, and his daughters Bonnie Brooks, and Karen Sulmonetti, their husbands Wayne Brooks and William Short, his daughter-in-law Brenda Sulmonetti, his sister Ethna Bergstrom, and his five grandchildren: Taylor and Cole Sulmonetti, Melissa Fleming and Carson Brooks, and Mateo Short. He is pre-deceased by his son Brian Sulmonetti. Earl and Juanita lived at Asbury Methodist Village for the last 10 years.
Earl was born in Jamestown, NY and grew up in New Castle, PA. Both his father and mother were ordained Methodist ministers. Earl attended Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, OH where he met his wife Juanita. They married in June 1954. He ran track there and was a fraternity brother in Sigma Phi Epsilon. He then attended Wesley Theological Seminary and became an ordained minister and served for over 45 years. Upon graduation he joined the Baltimore Washington Conference and served many churches in the Baltimore and later in the Washington DC area. Earl was a Maryland Master Mason.
Earl was so passionate about life and demonstrated that by touching the lives of many. Earl was a wonderful and strong presence in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. He loved coaching them on sports teams and traveling as a family. Earl loved most sports but his favorite was baseball and his beloved Baltimore Orioles, where he was a season ticket holder for over 20 years. He played the violin as a young man. He also loved playing cards and different board games. Another true passion for him was travel. Earl and Juanita visited all 50 states and six continents. He also served two churches in England during his career.
Earl was full of immense energy and his favorite activities were playing table tennis and bocce ball where he was a champion Senior Olympian winning several gold, silver and bronze medals. He also enjoyed being a voice-over speaker for the Asbury TV Station. Even though he traveled the world, he enjoyed his little bungalow in Bethany Beach, DE.
A viewing will be held on Friday, May 17, 2019 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, MD. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 1:30 pm at Asbury Methodist Village (301 Odendhal Ave., Gaithersburg, MD) in the Guild Chapel (211 Russell Ave) on campus. Reception to follow in the Park View Club Room.
