Charles F. Betz of Kensington, MD, passed away peacefully surrounded by family January 18, 2019 at Suburban Hospital. Mr. Betz was born October 15, 1935 in Washington, DC, retiring as a Certified Public Accountant. A native Washingtonian, Mr. Betz attended St. Anselm’s Abbey and Ben Franklin University and served in the Air Force Reserves. Mr. Betz was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Cecilia (2017) and his older brother Raymond (2012). He is survived by his younger brother John W. Betz, Sr., sister-in-law Marilynne Betz, and sister-in-law Teresa Betz. He was the uncle of six nieces and nephews and five great nieces and nephews.
Mr. Betz joined the CPA firm of Goldstein & Edwards in 1955, becoming a partner. He worked for the firm for over 50 years retiring in 2005. He joined the National Capital Optimist Club in 1969 and was a major participant on the Christmas Tree and Finance Committees. He was an avid model train collector and belonged to the Metropolitan Society of Model Engineers (M.S.M.E.) located in the attic of DC’s Union Station. Upon the closing of the M.S.M.E, he was a founding member of the SunBelt Train Club which carries on today. He had a great deal of knowledge of the inner workings of railroading and loved to share local stories.
Friends may call at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Drive Gaithersburg, MD 20877 on Friday, January 25, 2019 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm. Christian burial and interment will be held at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, MD 20722 on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 1pm
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the National Capital Optimist Club, 3805 Queen Matt Drive Olney, MD 20832.
