Thomas Edward Lynch passed away at his home in Rockville, MD on Saturday January 12, 2019. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mary Ann (Mawhinney) Lynch, three children, Mary Ellen (Steven) Lynch Comisso, Tom Lynch, and Dennis (Therese) Lynch, and five grandchildren, Aidan, Adrian, Jude, Sean, and Nicholas.
Tom was born on March 11, 1934 in Detroit, MI to parents Francis and Kathleen (O’Callaghan) Lynch. Tom was the fourth of five children. He is preceded in death by his siblings James, Patricia, and Kathleen, and survived by his brother, Terrence. Tom received a degree in electrical engineering from Wayne State University in 1958 before moving to Wisconsin to work for AC Sparkplug. A couple of years later, Tom packed up his green Volkswagen Karmann Ghia and moved to Washington, DC to work for the US Patent and Trademark Office and to attend law school at night at the Catholic University of America. He became very active in the Catholic College Club where he met his wife, Mary Ann. The couple were married on November 21, 1964 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Washington, DC. In 1967, he earned his law degree from Catholic University and continued what would be a long career at the Patent Office. Around 1968, Tom and his young family moved to Chevy Chase, MD where they would live for many years. He and his family were active parishioners at the Church of the Little Flower and members of Kenwood Golf & Country Club. After more than 30 years at the Patent Office, Tom retired in 1994 with the title of Administrative Patent Judge. In 1998, Tom and Mary Ann moved to Rockville, MD to live out their retirement in a home designed by their daughter and her husband, who are both architects. He took great pride in the comments from neighbors and visitors on the unique, contemporary design. Tom enjoyed close relationships with all of his children and their families, and was so happy to have known, more recently, his future daughter-in-law, Chelsea Jones.
Tom was known for his inquisitive mind and gentle heart. An avid do-it-yourselfer, he always had a home improvement project or two in the works as well as an auto repair project on-going in the driveway. Tom was also a backyard gardener for many years who moved his hobby to a rooftop greenhouse in his retirement years. He also enjoyed bowling and golf, and authored a manuscript for a science fiction novel. Most of all, Tom was deeply committed to his Catholic faith and applied those teachings in being a kind, patient, and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A funeral mass celebrating Tom’s life will be held at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 1513 Dunster Road, Rockville, MD on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 10:30 a.m Friends and family may visit before mass from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
