William E. Cumberland, a native Washingtonian, born September 11, 1938, to William and Marion Cumberland, died on November 29, after a long illness. Mr. Cumberland is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 47 years Clare Hogan Cumberland, and three children, Lisa Baldez (John Carey), Joseph “TJ” Baldez (Martha Baldez), and Kara Cumberland (David Goldberg) and five grandchildren, Phoenix Baldez, 1st Lt. Joseph Carey "USMC", Sam Carey, Max Goldberg and Sonya Goldberg.
Mr. Cumberland was Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America for 28 years. He was a registered lobbyist who worked on federal legislation affecting the real estate finance industry. Previously, he was Associate General Counsel with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, working with Ginnie Mae in the development of the Mortgage-Backed Security Program. He graduated from Georgetown Preparatory School, Georgetown University and Harvard Law School, Class of 1963. Mr. Cumberland worked for two summers as a legal associate for a shipping company in Copenhagen, Denmark and Shell Oil in London, England. He served on many community boards in Bethesda, MD, including President of the Springfield Citizens Association, Walt Whitman High School PTA, and the Sumner Village Community Association. He will be remembered for his love for family and friends, stewardship of his community, and a love of trains.
A celebration of Mr. Cumberland’s life will be held on Saturday, December 8, from 3:00-5:00pm at the Sumner Village Community Center, 4910 Sentinel Drive, Bethesda, MD 20816.
