A much-loved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, George Christos Elefantis, 93, passed away peacefully at his home on November 29, 2018. George is survived by his wife of 49 years, Roza (nee Liakos); sons Chris and Demetrios (Adrienne); sister Savoula Psilopoulos (Nikos); brother-in-law Christoforos Liakos (Nina); three nephews and a niece; and two grandchildren.

George was born in 1925 in the small mountainside village of Voutiro in Evrytania, Greece. After surviving tremendous hardships during WWII, he served in the Greek government army during the Greek Civil War in 19461949, helping to defend the nation against communism. George immigrated to the United States in 1956. Though never forgetting his homeland, he became a U.S. citizen and sponsored several family members and friends to come to the U.S. after him. He held various jobs in the hospitality industry in Washington, DC, working tirelessly to support his family. He was proud to have accomplished his dream of independently operating a restaurant for many years until he retired in the 1990s to care for his elderly parents in Greece.

George was a well-known member of the Greek Orthodox community in the Washington, DC, area. For many who knew him, George was a fatherly figure who had a strong moral center, someone who could always be relied upon to provide good counsel and advice. He was also the consummate host who loved to entertain and set people at ease with his quick sense of humor. He will be fondly remembered for his strong spirit, deep faith in Christ, and unwavering commitment to his family and friends.

A viewing and celebration of George’s life will be held on Monday, Dec. 3, from 6 pm to 8 pm at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park, Gaithersburg, MD. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 11:30 am at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 7701 Bradley Blvd, Bethesda, MD. Internment will follow at All Souls Cemetery in Germantown, MD.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be offered in George’s memory to St. George Greek Orthodox Church.
