Anna Elizabeth Gurmai, 69, passed away on July 31, 2018 in Silver Spring, Maryland. Anna was the beloved wife of Michael Gurmai (married 47 years); cherished mother of Erika Olson (Stephen) and David Gurmai; devoted grandmother of Caleb and Evan Olson; and dear sister of Mária Szmrekovszky and Gyöngyi Deák.
Anna was born in Szerencs, Hungary in 1948 to her late parents István and Anna Szmrekovszky. She met her husband Michael at the University of Miskolc and they were married in 1970. A year later, Anna graduated with a Master’s Degree in metallurgical engineering. In 1983, she immigrated to the United States with her husband and two children. After 3 years in Houston, Texas, they settled in the Chicago suburbs where they lived for 30 years. During this time, Anna worked as a Quality Control Manager for automotive and aerospace companies. She moved to Maryland with her husband in 2016 to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
Known for her ready smile and compassionate spirit, Anna was a source of support and comfort to those who knew her. Anna always loved being around children and children were drawn to her, sensing her special gift with them. She was delighted to become a grandmother in 2012.
Anna had a lifelong passion for the arts and enjoyed art museums, symphonies, and opera. Her home was typically filled with the sounds of classical music and she enjoyed attending performances with her husband at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, where they held season tickets for 25 years. She also had a great appreciation for the beauty of nature and enjoyed taking daily walks, frequenting botanical gardens, and visiting national parks. Whether traveling through the United States or internationally, Anna relished trips with her husband where they could explore the beauty, history, and customs of different places and cultures.
Her greatest joy was gathering with family and friends and she was always happy to host in her home where everyone felt welcome. She will be deeply missed and will remain in our hearts forever.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, Maryland on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at 3:00 p.m.
