Donnie Sue Ferrell, age 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 3, 2018 at the Wilson Health Care Center at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, Maryland. She was born in Chadbourn, North Carolina to Beulah Norris Thompson and Donald Marden Thompson. On August 30,1957 she married Charles M. Ferrell in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where she and Charles both worked for the Atomic Energy Commission. They soon relocated to Gaithersburg, Maryland where they have lived for almost 61 years.
After their children were grown, Donnie Sue worked in the administrative office of Asbury Methodist Village for 20 years where she maintained many friendships with residents and staff. She was active in the PTA, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Epworth United Methodist Church activities, and later volunteered for the local NARFE organization. She enjoyed sewing, reading, Jeopardy, 1,000-piece puzzles, and watching college basketball, especially the University of Maryland ladies basketball team. She was most proud of her granddaughter Marilyn whom she helped bring home from Russia in 2006 following a lengthy international adoption. It was at that time that Donnie Sue gained her new nickname “Buska”, short for “Babuska”.
Throughout her life, Donnie Sue touched others with her generosity and friendship. She is survived by her husband Charles M. Ferrell, a son Frank Ferrell and daughter Kimberly Ferrell, both of Germantown, Maryland, and a granddaughter Marilyn Ferrell, of Germantown, Maryland. She was predeceased by her son Jeffrey Ferrell in 2012.
