Elizabeth “Betty” Huber, 84, of Gaithersburg, Md., passed away peacefully on May 26, 2018. Beloved wife of Walter E. Huber; devoted mother of Craig Huber (Jean), Lisa Wolin (Lance), and Eric Huber (Yvonne); cherished grandmother of Lauren Huber, Kali Wolin, Lee Huber, Adam Huber, Camden Wolin, Alison Huber, and Emily Huber. Loving sister of Irene Kratzmeier and the late George Meister.
Betty was born in Baltimore, Md., to the late Adolph and Hedy Meister. She served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and earned her nursing degree at Maryland General Hospital Nursing School. Betty dedicated her life to helping others, first working as a registered nurse for National Institutes of Health and Suburban Hospital and afterward volunteering with the Girl Scouts for more than 40 years as a troop leader, Service Unit manager and director of Girl Scout Day Camp. She was fondly known as “Mother Hubbard”. The Girls Scouts even named an award in her honor, the “Betty Huber” award. In 2012, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital. She also was a volunteer at the Shady Grove Nursing Home for several years where she eventually became the director of their volunteer programs. Her optimism, smile and compassion were loved by everyone who had the pleasure to meet her.
Betty was devoted to her husband of over 62 years, Walter, and dearly loved her three children and seven grandchildren. Affectionately known as “Grandmom”, her grandchildren were one of her greatest joys. She loved all animals, especially her dogs and the many squirrels, chipmunks and birds that frequented her backyard that she fed daily. We will all miss her dearly every day.
Family and friends are welcome to call on Saturday, June 2, from 10:00 a.m. until service at 11:00 a.m. at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 E. Deer Park Dr., Gaithersburg, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty Huber’s memory to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, www.alzfdn.org.
