Helen Marie Hansen, a resident of Asbury Methodist Village, passed away peacefully May 11 at the Wilson Healthcare Center at 86. Her husband David, the love of her life whom she married in 1951, predeceased her in 1990. Helen was born in Oak Park, Ill., May 16, 1931, to Ralph C. Pochert and Helen Hermanek Pochert. She is survived by her sister, Carlee Rose Petelle (Don) of Huntley, Ill., her daughter Dava Hansen Unglesbee (Steve) of Arnold, Md., and her son Christopher Roy (Dianne) of Brookeville, Md. Helen’s grandchildren are Jonathan, Jeffrey and Matthew Unglesbee and Claire Hansen. Her niece is Sharon Petelle Kantor and nephews are Gary, Carl and Steve Petelle. Helen was active in the Asbury Clothes Closet, Bargain Mart, theater group and new residents’ programs. She was an elder at Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church, where she focused on congregational care ministries. She was a founder of the church’s Very Important Presbyterians (VIPS) senior citizens program and the church’s Lunch Bunch gathering for widows and friends. She was active in the church’s Meals on Wheels program for many years. Her homes in Chicago, Florida and Gaithersburg were fun and welcoming places for young people to meet. Her Christmas Eve parties featured traditional Swedish GLUG and a varying array of holiday treats. A 1949 graduate of Foreman High School in Chicago, she was featured in several student theatrical productions. After graduation and before her marriage, she worked at a hardware business and modeled for a Chicago-area department store. While raising her children in Chicago and Rockledge, Fla., she was a church secretary. In each of her churches, she started or revitalized membership newsletters. After raising her children, she was the assistant to the financial officer of a furniture manufacturer and a receptionist at an endodontist practice. She designed and made baskets and knitted items, as well as crocheted and crewel works. She enjoyed golfing, bridge, her dog (Dodo) and English Springer Spaniels (Big Sam, Little Sam, Becky and Albert) and spending time with people to make them comfortable and happy. Raised a Lutheran, her trust was in her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ and she is with Him now. A funeral service will at Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church, 610 S. Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD 20877 on Thursday May 17, 2018 at 11 am. Interment will be held at 2 pm at Parklawn Memorial Park Cemetery (Please gather at the front entrance).
