Laura Lee legg Turner passed away on February 26, 2018, at Holy Cross Hospital. She was born in Silver Spring, MD, on September 1, 1932, to the late Bessie Roberts Legg and the late Herbert B. Legg. Her sister Evelyn Legg preceded her in death. Laura is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years Russell “Russ" H. Turner; brother Norman Legg (Judith) of Thurmont, MD; special nephew Erik Legg; and other nieces and nephews.
Laura received her undergraduate degree from Marshall University and her Master’s degree from the University of Virginia. She taught in the Baltimore County Public School System as well as Frederick and Montgomery Counties. She was the principal of Laytonsville Elementary School when she retired after 25 years of service. After her retirement, she was a substitute principal within the school system and helped with the supervision of teachers. She was also a volunteer at Asbury Methodist Village for several years.
Laura was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, DarneBloomers Garden Club, Laytonsville Woman’s Club, and the Montgomery County Historical Society. She was instrumental in the founding of the Laytonsville Historical Center. She was an avid gardener and a friend to all – her beautiful smile and loving spirit will be missed. Laura and her husband were members of the National Cathedral Association and enjoyed the worship services held there.
There will be a visitation for family and friends on Sunday, March 4, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 E. Deer Park Dr., Gaithersburg, MD. Services will be held in Charlottesville, VA, on Monday, March 5, at 2:00 p.m. at Hill & Wood Funeral Home with the Reverend Greg Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.
