Richard Andrew Kmetz was born on April 2, 1930 in Garfield, New Jersey. He graduated from Eastern Christian School in Paterson, New Jersey in 1948. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952, and served in the Korean War until his honorable discharge in 1956; at this time, he returned home to care for his widowed mother. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. He is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Susan Kmetz, and his older sister, Lillian. He is survived by his younger sister, Doris, his wife, Evelyn, his five children, Mark, Keith, Lori, Christal, and Kathy, his daughter-in-law Karen, his sons-in-law Matt and Michael, and his four grandchildren, Zack, Emily, Christopher, and Aislín. He was especially proud of his years in the service, adored his grandchildren, and was particularly grateful to his daughter, Lori, who devoted herself to his care in his elder years.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, MD on Wednesday December 20th at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his name to The American Legion, Gaithersburg, MD
