Stephen Graham Arapian, 67, of Germantown, MD, passed away at home with family at his side on November 20, 2017, after a year-long battle with cancer. Born September 23, 1950, at Garfield Hospital in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Edward, Sr., and Cynthia Winifred (Graham) Arapian. He enjoyed spending time with family, vacations at the beach, cooking and creating recipes, and was a life-long Washington Redskins fan. Steve lived in Montgomery County all his adult life.
After graduation from Archbishop Carroll High School in DC in 1969, Steve joined the Navy and served as a Corpsman in Virginia, Hawaii, and then in Subic Bay on the USS Hassayampa during the Vietnam War. He received several honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. After Honorable Discharge from the Navy, Steve returned to the DC area and transitioned his corpsman military skills, working as an Emergency Technician in the Emergency Department at George Washington University Hospital where he met his future wife, Linda.
Continuing his career in health care, Steve graduated from the newly developed Physician Assistant Program at George Washington University in August 1979. He was employed in the Emergency Department at Laurel Regional Hospital for 27 years, before transitioning to Occupational Medicine with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue in 2007 until his death.
Mr. Arapian was a Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C) since 1979, a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, and a Certified Medical Examiner for the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for Commercial Drivers’ Licenses (CDL).
Mr. Arapian was beloved husband of Linda (Niland) Arapian for 42 years; father of Stephanie Arapian of Los Angeles CA; Michael Arapian (Andrea), of Clemmons, NC; and Jennifer Arapian, of New York City; grandfather of Caiden S and Dominick H Arapian, of Clemmons, NC; and brother of Edward Arapian Jr of Florida; Suzanne (Michael) Horn of Austin, TX; Christopher Arapian of Phoenix, AZ, and Cynthia (Donald) McGrady, of Thurmont MD; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation on Friday, November 24, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, November 25, at 10:00 a.m., both at Our Lady of the Visitation, 14139 Seneca Road, Darnestown, MD.
