Fred J. Brinkman, age 88, of Potomac, MD died Tuesday, September 19, 2017 in the comfort of his home with family by his side. He grew up in Cleveland, OH, attended Cathedral Latin High School, and received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Dyke College. After serving in the United States Army during the Korean War, Fred began his professional career with Arthur Andersen & Co. and rose to the position of Managing Partner of the Cleveland, OH office. In 1977, Fred and his family moved to San Francisco, CA where he became the Managing Partner of Arthur Andersen’s San Francisco, CA office as well as the Regional Managing Partner for Southeastern United States and Area Managing Partner for Asia Pacific Area and Mainland China. In 1981, Fred and the family again moved across the country to Washington, DC where he continued to serve as the Area Managing Partner for the Asia-Pacific Area as well as the Managing Partner of Arthur Andersen’s Washington D.C. office. Fred retired from Andersen in 1991 and became a Senior Financial Consultant to the top management at Johnston Lemon where he spent over 20 years. His door was always open to anyone who needed help or advice. Mr. Brinkman served on several corporate boards including Washington Mutual Investors Fund, Figgie International Inc., Clark-Reliance Corp., Charles E. Smith Residential Realty, Inc. and Washington Gas Light Company. He was also a member of several professional and civic organizations including Federal City Council and the American Institute of CPAs. He also served on the boards of SHARE, D.C Inc., Special Olympics International and the Academy for Economic Education.
Fred enjoyed his time at Burning Tree Country Club, playing rounds of golf with his many friends and colleagues. He was also a parishioner at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church for many years, rarely missing a weekly service, and was a member of the Federal Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Fred, a dedicated and loyal family man, was the beloved husband of Barbara Ann Brinkman for 63 years; loving father of Charles Brinkman (Melanie), Joan Brown (Oliver), Todd Brinkman (Holly), Thomas Brinkman (Deborah), James Brinkman (Silvana), and the late Beth Brinkman Stoycos; grandfather of Matt, Rob, Sarah, Will, Annie, Kristen, Olivia, Tom, Lee, Jack, Michael, Jim, Kevin, Beth Anne, Sophia, Freddy, and Nicole. Mr. Brinkman was the son of the late Fred and Adelaide Sullivan Brinkman and was preceded in death by his brother, Lawrence Brinkman.
Friends may call at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 9200 Kentsdale Drive, Potomac, MD on Thursday, September 28, 2017, from 6 pm to 8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the church on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 10 am.
