Passed away suddenly on September 14, 2017 in Mexican Hat, Utah while on a vacation trip.
Bob was born in Butte, Nebraska, July 10, 1938, to Willis Riley and Birdie Florence (Adamson) Thurber. He graduated from high school in Burwell, NE, in 1956. He received an A.B. degree in physics from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1960 and an M.S. degree in physics from the University of Maryland in 1963. He started working at the National Bureau of Standards (which later became the National Institute of Standards and Technology) in 1962 and retired from the Semiconductor Electronics Division in 2003. Bob's expertise was in the measurement of electrical and optical properties of semiconductors.
Bob's hobbies included tennis, gardening and travel. He visited all 50 states with his wife and two children and continued traveling in the U.S. and Europe after retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Bowen Thurber, a son Kent Robert Thurber, two sisters, Jean T. Sells of Connecticut and Joanne T. Schultink of Michigan and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Karen Augusta Thurber in 2013.
Viewings will be on Friday, September 22 from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Dr. Gaithersburg, MD 20877. Services will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Mill Creek Parish United Methodist Church, 7101 Horizon Terrace, Rockville, MD. Interment will be at Parklawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Rockville, MD at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bob's memory to Mill Creek Parish Handbell Fund at the above address.
