Robert (Bob) Winfield Wood passed away on July 26, 2017. He was surrounded by the 36 members of the 42nd Wood family reunion. Robert was born on December 29, 1931, and on June 6, 1959 he married Mary Amelia Beard in New York City.
Bob is a graduate of the University of Detroit/Mercy for his Bachelors of Science, Vanderbilt University for his Masters of Science, and Cornell University where he completed his education receiving a PhD in Radiological Physics. He spent 1 year at Middlesex Hospital in London, England on a post-doctoral fellowship.
Bob started work at the Atomic Energy Commission in July 1962. He later retired from the Department of Energy in June 1994. During this period, he advanced from Project Manager of Research Development to Branch Chief of the Division of Biology and Medicine.
When Bob retired, he was presented with a poster of him on a bicycle, singing lustily because he was not only a scientist; he was an avid musician and athlete. His joy and passion for singing expanded multiple continents and prestigious organizations. In the past, he sang with the Dessoff Choirs in New York City, as well as the Royal Choral Society under Sir Malcom Sargent in London. While living in the Washington DC area, he has sung with the Cathedral Choral Society, the Master Chorale of Washington, the Cantate Chamber Singers, and since 2000, he sang with the Washington Chorus and the Washington Men’s Camerata. One of the benefits of singing with these various groups has included the opportunities for both Bob and Mary to travel around the world and sing in locations including Berlin, Prague and Paris. He sang in church choirs wherever he was located.
Bob was a founding member of the C&O Bike Patrol and loved to ride through all parts of Montgomery County. He was also a founder of the Rockville Tennis Association. An avid table tennis player, he participated in many local table tennis tournaments in the Rockville, MD area and in 2013, participated in the Senior Olympics table tennis competition located in Cleveland, OH. When available, he would read and record textbooks for the blind.
Bob is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Beard Wood, of Gaithersburg, MD; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Karl Kindt of Grand Prairie, TX; his son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Toni Wood of Glenwood, MD; his son, Douglass Wood of Pleasant Hill, CA and his grandchildren, Kristopher and Kody Kindt, and Tyler and Alexandra Wood.
A memorial service will be held at Neelsville Presbyterian Church, 20701 Frederick Road, Germantown MD on September 2, 2017 at 4:00pm. Memorial donations made in his name may be sent to the Washington Chorus, the Washington Men’s Camerata, or the Demetrius Project in c/o the Washington Men’s Camerata.
