Charles M. Overbey, 78, of Germantown, MD, passed away on June 26, 2017, after suffering a heart attack. Charles was born in Benham, Kentucky, and received a degree in engineering from Rose Hulman University, in Indiana, before obtaining a PhD in psychology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. After receiving his PhD, he taught psychology with a focus on human factors at the University of Santa Barbara, in California, before returning to the East Coast to work at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He spent the following decades specializing in the field of human factors at the National Highway Transportation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the Federal Aviation Administration. From 1990 to 2009, he worked at the FAA focusing on investigations of pilot and human error in airplane crashes. He received multiple awards and citations for his work there. Charles loved nature, hiking, and the outdoors. He was a passionate supporter of the Yosemite Conservancy. He was also a devoted father and husband. He’s survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Mary Margaret Overbey, and his daughter, Erin M. Overbey, an archivist at The New Yorker magazine. Friends and family are welcome to visit on Friday, June 30th, from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 11:00 a.m. at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 E. Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, MD.
