Dr. David S. Liem
David Liem was born in Indonesia, and came to the US in 1964. He received his Doctoral degree in Zoology from the Bandung Institute of Technology and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in Herpetology. After receiving his Ph. D., he did his Post Doctorate at the University of Queensland in Australia for three years. David worked for the Australian and Papua New Guinea governments to study ecological effects for seven years before returning to the United States and settling in the Washington, DC area. While doing his Post Doctorate at the University of Queensland, he discovered the gastric brooding frog in eastern Australia. Other Australian scientists continued working on this genus and named a species after David. He has published scientific papers on herpetology. After returning to the US, David worked for a toxicology laboratory as a study director. Dr. Liem worked for the Environmental Protection Agency for 27 years, reviewing the effect of pesticides on humans from toxicology studies that were submitted by pesticide companies in support of pesticide registrations. David was involved in the marketing approval process of many pesticides. Dr. Liem passed away on Sunday, June 11, 2017. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Francisca Liem of Potomac, MD, his daughter Marcella Liem Stewart, her husband Doug and grandson Calvin of Albuquerque, NM.
Friends may call at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 9200 Kentsdale Drive, Potomac, MD 20854 on Friday June 23, 2017 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 AM. Interment: All Souls Cemetery, Germantown, MD
