Charles A. Sawchenko, Jr., 79, died Sunday, May 14, 2017 of natural causes at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Md. with his children and extended family by his side. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Liberatore Sawchenko in 2001.
Charles, a resident of Montgomery Village, MD since 1971, was born in Masontown, PA on December 30, 1937. After graduating from high school, he left his home town to join the U.S. Navy and see the world as a meteorologist.
After his service, Charles earned a bachelor's degree from West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV then moved to the Washington, DC area where he reconnected with 'Mountaineer' alumni Mary Liberatore who he married in November of 1963. The couple went on to have a 38 year marriage and three children.
Charles went on to earn a Master in Fine Arts from the George Washington University while raising a family and teaching art in the Montgomery County Public School system where he worked from 1966 until his retirement in 1993.
Charles was member of the Touchstone Gallery in Washington, DC for many years and exhibited his works throughout the Maryland-DC area. One of he proudest professional accomplishments was the exhibition of his painting "Dalmatian Coast of Yugoslavia" in the Air and Space Museum Views of the Earth exhibit. Charles brought his artistic charms into the kitchen and was know as a great amateur chef. He loved traveling with his wife Mary and his children to all areas of the world. However, his greatest passion was fishing and looked forward to his yearly Montana fly fishing trips with his children and nephew.
Charles is survived by his son Charles III of Smyrna, DE, daughter Francesca and soon-to-be son in law Lev Khodorkovsky of Baltimore, MD, daughter Stephanie and son in law Gavin Hynes of Baltimore, MD, granddaughter Rowen of Phoenix, AZ, and many nieces and nephews including Mary Collins, Nancy Sawchenko and Joanna Dorsey of Masontown, PA.
A memorial celebration will be held in his honor on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 12:00 noon at his home in Montgomery Village.
