|William Edward Mitchell|
William E. Mitchell, 67, long-time resident of Germantown, Maryland, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on May 2, 2017, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. Beloved husband of Susan Mitchell for the past 44 years, he was also survived and will be dearly missed by his two daughters Erin (Justin) Slade and Ashley (Ugyen) Taktsang, both of British Columbia, Canada; his five grandchildren; his brother Jim (Sandi) Mitchell of Kettering, Ohio; and his sister Linda (Jim) Stauffer of Bluffton, South Carolina.
Bill was born in Hampton, Virginia, and graduated from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, with a degree in computer science. He served for eight years in the United States Air Force and always fondly recalled his work on the SR-71 software. He recently retired from Orbital ATK where he was known by many as “the best darn software engineer”.
He was a natural problem-solver who loved finding solutions and figuring things out –the harder the better. He also enjoyed visiting wineries in the Shenandoah Valley and wandering the shores of the Chesapeake Bay looking for fossilized shark teeth. Never one to let any situation get him down, he stayed positive to the end. As a person who cared deeply about the happiness and comfort of all beings we would like to honor his spirit by requesting donations may be made to Second Chance Wildlife Center, 7101 Barcellona Drive, Gaithersburg, MD 20879 in lieu of flowers. Services and interment will be held privately.
Having assisted in the software design, the launching and patching of many a satellite, now it's his turn to see beyond the stars and figure out the biggest riddles of all.
