DONOVAN ALFRED SMITH, 89, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2017 at his home in Rockville, MD.

Don was born July 26, 1927 in Aledo, IL. His parents, Myrtle & Alfred Smith, and his three proud sisters Eunice (Tee) Hecht, Ilene (Tommy) Docherty, Alice (Ivan) Cooper preceded him in death.

After service in the Navy, Don graduated from Monmouth College (IL). He married his college sweetheart, Lois. They were married for 65 years. They moved to Rockville, MD in 1958 where he had a long career as a Health Physicist with the Atomic Energy Commission, later the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He earned his JD and was a member of the DC Bar, was a Certified Health Physicist, and was member of the Health Physics Society for over 50 years. At times he was active with a local pistol club, his union, wrestling and bridge club. His enjoyed the family vacation home on Chincoteague Island and adored his grandchildren who called him PopPop. He was generous to others, and intelligent until the very end of his life.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lois Tornquist Smith, and 7 children: Andy (Vera); Dan (Kim); Kristen (Carl); Jeff (Terri); Ed (Debbie); Steve, and Phil (Anne), plus 10 grandchildren: Christa (Byron), Caitlin, Emily, Kyle, Chase, Matthew, Cheyenne, Joshua, Gunnar, and Soren, plus many fond nieces and nephews, and their families.

Family and friends are invited to gather to celebrate Don’s life and legacy on Saturday, April 8. Visitation will be at 10 am followed by a funeral service starting at 11 am, at DeVol Funeral Home 10 East Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, MD.
