Greg Robert Bertrand, of Poolesville, MD and Worthington, MA, died on November 28, 2016 in Bethesda, MD. Born May 13, 1954 in Sun Prairie, WI to Robert J. Bertrand and Elizabeth Batchelor.
Greg received a BA in Film Studies from Emerson College in Boston, MA in 1977. Greg’s professional career started at NBC News, initially as a documentary filmmaker, and eventually as a film editor, from 1983 to 2003. He worked on a variety of shows including SNL, Dateline, The Today Show, and The Nightly News, among others. He won many awards including several Emmys for his work on long news format pieces. Along the way, he was involved in editing a variety of documentary films; of note was “The Silent Shame” in 1984. He subsequently freelanced as a video editor in NYC. Most recently, he worked as a TV news consultant for the Voice of America in Washington, DC.
Greg had an overwhelming amount of excitement and passion for all things outdoors. He was an avid kayaker, canoeist, sailor, skier, hiker and cyclist. He had a deep connection with water and nature; his time in the out-of-doors was when he felt most at peace in the world.
He is survived by his mother, Liz Batchelor; two children, Elliot and Claudia Bertrand; partner, Liz O’Dair; stepmother Patricia Tirkot; stepdaughter Miranda Harter; brother Jeff (Deanna) Bertrand; sisters Louise Reist and Lynne (Jay) Nowicki; nieces and nephews: Lizzy (Vinnie, June) Labelle, Joel (Michelle) Bertrand, and Hannah Bertrand; Lisa and Jay Reist; Bella, Zoe, and Cash Nowicki; Phillip and Patrick Haggerty; Pieter, Diederick, and Nora van Wassenaer; Lily and Charlotte Keats; Seamus and Kailin Matson; Shiloh Sharmadh; and Milo and Clover Feldberg; and former wife, Pamela Matson.
A service to celebrate Greg’s life will be held Saturday, December 3rd from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Unity of Gaithersburg, 111 Central Avenue in Gaithersburg. An informal gathering will be held after the service at the Bertrand house.
