Idabeth McNeeley Thornton passed away Saturday, November 5, 2016 at Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg, Maryland where she had been a resident for over 20 years. She was the beloved wife of Allan F. Thornton, Sr. whom she married on September 11, 1982. She is predeceased by her husband and her brother, Harry Drake McNeeley (Murray) of Kingsport, Tennessee. Idabeth was the stepmother of Allan F. Thornton, Jr. MD of Norfolk, Virginia (Lisa) and Abigail Thornton Givens, MD (John) of Nevada City, California. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy McNeeley McCutcheon of Asbury Methodist Village, nieces Linda McCutcheon Smith (David) of Blacksburg, Virginia, Brooke McNeeley of Cary, North Carolina, nephews Bill McNeeley (Lynda) of Atlanta, Georgia and Larry McCutcheon (Joyce) of Hohenwald, Tennessee, and grandchildren Sarah McCloud Johnson and Kerri Ann Thornton. Idabeth was born November 22, 1921, in Orlinda, Robertson County, Tennessee to Harry Watson and Lemma Elizabeth Drake McNeeley. She attended Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee. As a young woman, Idabeth worked in Nashville, Tennessee for the Baptist Sunday School Board. She later moved to Chevy Chase, Maryland and was secretary of Chevy Chase United Methodist Church where she was a member for over thirty years. Idabeth will be intered in the columbarium at Chevy Chase United Methodist Church. Services will be held at a later date.
