Mary Jane O'Fallon, nee McCauley, passed from this life on October 20, 2016. She was born at Rockaway Beach, NY, the first daughter of Richard and Alice McCauley. She was a good and loyal daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She graduated from Georgetown University School of Nursing as a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps in 1948. This training served her well from her first job at Georgetown University Hospital to Mt. Sinai and St. Joseph in New York to the VA, St Francis and Holy Cross Hospitals in Connecticut. Her career included a variety of facilities in the Washington area (including stints at the NIH and Coast Guard Health Clinic) and her final service with the Dorothy Day Women's Health Center. This career allowed her to exercise her considerable capacity for hard work, flexibility and gentle service to others. She was honored by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington for her volunteer service at the health clinic and at the soup kitchen at St. Martin of Tours. No one adjective can describe her, but several certainly apply. She was faithful to her God, her family and her principles. She was curious, she was always posing questions, be it about a point of history, public affairs or family lore. Her facile mind endowed her with quick wit and the ability to grasp the nuances of a broad variety of topics. She was a self-taught cook, gardener, bridge player and world traveler. She was strong from early childhood, she was raised to be independent. She never stepped away from challenge and remained firm in her convictions and faith. If she saw injustice, she was quick to advocate for others, especially if they were family. She was generous until her last days, she was always ready to offer a listening ear, a helping hand and an encouraging word. She supported a wide variety of religious and civil charities. She married John O'Fallon at Holy Trinity Church in Washington, DC in 1951 and together they had six children. She held her children to a high standard of conduct, etiquette and achievement. She strove to expose them to literature, art music and the world at large, but her greatest wish was for them to be faithful Catholics. She is predeceased by her parents and infant son, David. Surviving family include her sisters Alice Cronin and Eileen McCague; her husband of 65 years, John O'Fallon; sons John (Sarah) of Arlington, VA, Brian (Laurie) of Marietta, GA, Denis (Celia) of Frederick, MD; daughters Kate (Gil) Vinzani of Raleigh, NC and Joan (Doug) Shobe of New Market, MD; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She will be missed by all. The family will receive visitors at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Dr., Gaithersburg, MD 20877 on Thursday October 27, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Raphael Catholic Church, Falls Rd. and Dunster Rd., Rockville, MD 20854 on Friday October 28, 2016 at 10:30 AM. If it is your wish, in lieu of flowers you may donate to the Franciscan Foundation of the Holy Land at:www.ffhl.org in her memory.
