Mary Joan Kamprad died peacefully at Riderwood Village in Silver Spring, MD on Tuesday, July 12, 2016. Joan was the daughter of the late Alfred Theodore Newberry and Evelyn Louise (Lynch) Newberry. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 13, 1927, Joan grew up in Washington, D.C. and graduated from McKinley High School in 1945. She was predeceased by her brothers, Alfred T. Newberry, Jr. and Donald N. Newberry.
As wife of a U.S. State Department Foreign Service Officer, Joan and her family made their homes in Germany, Iraq, Pakistan, and India before returning to settle in the Washington, D.C. area in 1968. She worked in a variety of administrative positions in her children’s schools and at area companies; she also served in several volunteer capacities to help others in her community. In her free time, she enjoyed creating batik artwork; playing bridge; refinishing furniture; spending time at the beach with friends and family; and other times together with her longtime companion Theodore Hattenburg, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Joan is cherished by her four children: Alison Joan Thompson of Portsmouth, VA; Frederick Barry Kamprad and wife Lola Prats Kamprad of Gaithersburg, MD; Evelyn Louise Krenz and husband Keith Krenz of Bethlehem, PA; and Walter Theodore Kamprad, Jr. of Gaithersburg, MD; and eight grandchildren: Leslie Ann (Thompson) McDonald of Nederland, CO; Phillip Alan Thompson and wife Shannon Thompson of Virginia Beach, VA; Jennifer Jo (Thompson) Moses and husband Kaseem Moses of Portsmouth, VA; Christina (Kamprad) Trainer and husband Kyle Trainer of Gaithersburg, MD; Lauren Elizabeth (Krenz) Bartell and husband William Bartell of San Antonio, TX; Nicholas Barry Kamprad and wife Ariana (Gestson) Kamprad of Gaithersburg, MD; Katherine Amy (Krenz) Riel and husband Jason Riel of Bellingham, MA; and Douglas Dean Krenz of Philadelphia, PA. Also, Joan has six great-grandchildren: Anna Ruth Thompson; Christopher Ryan McDonald; Henry Alan Thompson; Megan Ryana McDonald; Kaseem Andrew Moses, Jr.; and Ava Mariana Trainer plus many nieces and nephews.
A private service will be held. Interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD. Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
