Audrey Bever Rhiel, a long-time resident of Silver Spring peacefully passed away at the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility in Rockville on Saturday February 27, 2016.  She was 93. Audrey was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on June 4, 1922, to Clarence A. and Florence D. Bever.  She was the younger sister of Dr. Enid L. Bever who predeceased her.  When she was seven the family moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where her father was Vice President of the Foundries at Bethlehem Steel. Audrey graduated from Penn State University where she majored in Chemistry and according to family lore Bridge.  She was also a member of Chi Omega sorority. In 1943, displaying her fierce independent streak she moved to Washington, DC, where she worked for the Department of Agriculture testing textiles for their tolerance to flame resistance to be used in World War 11.  Her move to D.C. put her on the path where she would meet her beloved husband, Joseph L. Rhiel.  They were married in 1946 and had a daughter, Susan and a son, Thomas.  Audrey worked for the Montgomery County Public Schools for twenty years as a library aide.  She was a life- long reader and passed this love of books to her children. Following her retirement, Audrey maintained an active life playing bridge, traveling, participating in the Silver Spring Womens Club, gardening and working the ever ubiquitous crossword puzzles that were always on her dining room table.  She was a dog lover and owned many through the course of her life.  She is survived by her daughter, Susan Reed (Bill) of Rockville, Md. and her son, Tom Rhiel (Sally Sutton) of Denver, Colorado. In addition, she leaves three grandchildren, Kate Reed, Christian Rhiel and Madeline Rhiel.  She will be greatly missed, but in addition to the memories of her we will always hold, Audreys passion for needlework has left us surrounded by much of her work in the form of pillows, countless Christmas decorations and other treasured items she produced.
