Arthur Edwin Johnson of Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg, MD died on December 3, 2015. He was born on June 18, 1928 in East Chicago, Indiana. He graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. He then completed officer candidate school in Newport, Rhode Island. While in the US Navy, he was a Seabee from 1954 to 1958. During this time, his unit helped build an airport in the Philippine Islands. After his stint in the US Navy, he relocated to the suburban Maryland area. He was employee at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory (which later was renamed to the Naval Surface Weapons Center) in White Oak Maryland for 32 years and earned several meritorious awards for weapons systems. He was a charter member of St. Stevens Lutheran Church in Silver Spring MD then became a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, MD. He and his wife Alice were married in 1960 and built a home in the Walnut Hill neighborhood of Gaithersburg. He was active in both churches and served on several committees. He was also a leader in the Walnut Hill Citizens Association where he lived with his family for 52 years. He enjoyed traveling with his wife to the Caribbean, Hawaii, the Baltic, the Mediterranean, and the Scandinavian countries. He was an avid reader of military books, and was a prolific gardener. He also enjoyed boating with his family.He leaves his wife Alice Kilejian Johnson of 55 years. He also leaves his daughter, Margie Berger and her husband, Howard, his oldest son, Pete and his fiancée Karen Eld and his youngest son Andy, his wife Stephanie Alonso Johnson and their 2 sons, Lex and Travers. Friends may call at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, MD on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Gaithersburg, MD on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at 1:00 PM.
