Malcolm Lawrence, 89, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, died Monday, June 1, 2015, surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Mary Jacqueline Lawrence, loving father of nine children: Theresa (deceased), Catherine Haney (Dennis), Joan Ciampa (Arthur), Malcolm Jr. (Sally), Louise (deceased), Joseph (Nancy), Frances, Ann (Eric Wasowicz), and Ellen Cianelli (David). Devoted grandfather of fifteen: Eric, Anthony, Jennifer, Lisa, Arthur J., Jason, Valerie, Alan, Alexandra, Michael, Matthew, Tess, Cole, Mariah, and Sebastian; great grandfather of ten.
Malcolm was a native Washingtonian, and has been a resident of Montgomery County, Maryland since 1950. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and was in aerial combat action in Europe as a radio operator/gunner on a B-17 bomber crew. He flew 23 combat missions. Malcolm received his Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Foreign Affairs and Economics and a Master of Arts degree in Government and Economic Policy, both from the George Washington University. Malcolm�s three decades in the Foreign Service included overseas assignments to England and Switzerland. Among his many interests, Malcolm was a professional drummer, school-builder, civic activist, education consultant, free-lance writer, radio commentator, poet and book author.
Friends will be received at the DeVol Funeral Home at 10 East Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, Maryland 20877 from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, where flowers can be sent.
Funeral service at Gate of Heaven Cemetery Chapel, 13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, Maryland 20906 at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 5.
