Jean Crosby Gavel, of Clinton, MD, died May 17, 2015 with her family by her side. She was born in Geneva, NY, on September 2, 1935, to the late Joseph and Grace (Betty) Parrish. She graduated from Geneva High school in 1953, Alfred University with an Associates degree in 1955. She returned to school after raising her four children and received her Bachelors in Sociology from University of Maryland in 1987 and then her Master of Social Work from University of Maryland Baltimore in 1989.
Jean married Paul Gavel in 1956. Due to Pauls US Air Force military assignments, they lived in CA, NY, KS, AL, MO, AZ, OK, and OH before moving to MD and retiring from the USAF in 1995. Jean was a Presbyterian all her life and had a deep love of Christ. She was a licensed Social worker at Prince Georges Hospital Center for 23 years and then continued to work part time at Glenridge Medical Center until three years ago, before retiring.
She loved her career as she was extremely passionate about helping others. She enjoyed traveling, beaches/water, experiencing other cultures, dogs, and nature - particularly enjoying visiting the local park and spending time there to walk, read and study.
Jean is survived by her Husband, Paul Gavel, four children; Lori Rogers of San Diego, CA, Scott Gavel of Damascus, MD, Wendy Fuster of Damascus, MD, and Julie Gavel of Clinton, MD. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Brain Injury Association of America, PO Box 7416, Merrifield, VA 22116. www.biausa.org/donate.htm.
