Diane H. Schilke
Diane who was described by friends as resourceful, resilient, and redoubtable, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 20. Born in Brooklyn she spent part of her childhood in Jamaica, Queens, NY. Her family moved to Wethersfield, CT, where Diane's father Albert, a Lutheran minister, was called to lead worship. A graduate of Susquehanna University, Diane was as a music teacher. She then joined the United Luthern Church Foundation and became a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in New York City. Thereafter she worked for G. Schirmer Inc., a classical music publisher founded in 1861. As a pianist and member of the Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity, Diane was talented and knowledgeable. She delighted in the presence of musical geniuses such as Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber and Carlo Menotti.
Diane joined a consulting firm and moved to Washington, DC in 1968. She finished her administrative career with Proskauer Rose in entertainment law in 2000. Jack Valenti, former director of the Motion Picture Association America, attended her retirement reception. Diane was an active member of St. Stephen the Martyr parish for 30 years. She was a lay minister and served at Rock Creek Manor nursing center. She received the Archdiocese of Washington's Order of Merit and was recognized by the DC Healthcare Association as Volunteer of the Year. In 2008, Diane joined Augustana Lutheran Church where she again found an interactive community of support through her latter years. Diane is remembered for her generosity, integrity and stalwart compassion for others - animal, plant or human.
Diane was a loving friend and Godmother. She had a robust sense of humor accompanied by a beautiful smile and contagious laugh. Diane is survived by her cousins Babette G. Schieman, John Geffken, Jane G. Henderson, and John Schilke. A memorial service will be held at Augustana Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2018.
