Donna Roselle Ward was born July 21, 1930 to Robert and Celestine McCullough in Salina Kansas. She grew up in Abilene, Kansas where she was an excellent student and enjoyed playing sports in her youth. Following high school, Donna went to Chicago in 1948 to attend business college. After completing business college in 1950, she began work at a law office in Chicago. During this time, she met James E. Ward. James and Donna were married August 18, 1951 at St. Ambrose church in Chicago.
James enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly thereafter and the newlywed couple moved to San Diego, CA. James was deployed to Korea in 1951, at which time Donna went to Colorado Springs, CO where she resided with her mother and step-father (Celestine and Theodore Rand). While in Colorado Springs, Donna was employed at the North American Defense Command (NADC) which later became NORAD. When James returned from Korea, they relocated to Freeport, IL where Donna worked at Micro Switch Corporation and later as a court reporter.
Three children born to their union in Freeport, IL. In 1962, the Ward family moved Springfield, IL. Donna worked for the state of Illinois in various positions. When she retired in 1995, she was the manager for the Office of the Attorney General of state of Illinois.
Donna was a life-long learner. Throughout her life-time, she took courses toward an associate’s degree, many professional development classes and, post-retirement, she earned her Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) license. She was active in the Lioness Club at St. Joseph parish in Homewood, IL engaging in numerous projects to benefit the local community. Donna loved taking care of her family and extended family and always was ready to provide and support and a warm hug.
With their loveable dog, Teddy, James and Donna migrated west in 2005 and settled in Gilbert, AZ to be near family. They were active parishioners at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Faith Community. In 2011, again to be near family, they moved to Washington, DC where they were parishioners at Annunciation Church. Donna and James enjoyed traveling.
