Linda Anderson Beebe
Anderson Beebe died at home on January 23, 2018, after a short, intense fight
against her cancer. David and Marc, her
sons, were holding her hands, with Hank, her husband, and her sisters gathered
‘round, as she “slipped the surly bonds of Earth.” Linda and Hank’s marriage was 56 years of
extraordinary happiness and partnership.
Linda was a strong woman, a fighter for others all her life: working for Family Services to improve the
lot of enlisted airmen’s families; to create better conditions for juvenile
offenders in Virginia; to preserve and extend the knowledge bases of the social
work and psychology professions; to win equal representation and a fair shake
for the residents of the District of Columbia, and always, always, for equal
rights and responsibilities for women.
Linda was at the forefront of advancing scholarly publishing, especially
in promulgating digital knowledge bases.
She was past Associate Executive Director for Communications at the
National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and past Senior Director of PsychINFO at the American Psychological Association (APA). She was especially pleased to have been
elected as the first woman to chair CrossRef, an international not-for-profit membership organization that exists to make scholarly
communications better. Most recently, Linda was serving as
the president of the League of Women Voters of the District of Columbia
(LWVDC). For all of her accomplishments,
Linda was most proud of the men her sons became. She imbued them with her values of integrity,
compassion, a strong work ethic, generosity, and the requirement to give more
than you get. A celebration to honor Linda will take place in the near future;
interment at Arlington National Cemetery will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers and if you are so
inclined, Linda requests donations to either the League of Women Voters of DC,
or the Capital Area Food Bank.
