Ana (Anita) Providencia Lavallee

Born on December 8, 1938, in Humacao, Puerto Rico, she passed away peacefully after a protracted struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease,on the Feast of the Holy Trinity in Bethesda, Maryland, on June 11, 2017, in the care of her husband of almost fifty-six years, Fernand.  In addition to her husband, Anita is survived by her sons and daughters-in-laws Fernand and Lisa, Charles and Jennifer, and her three grandchildren Joseph Charles, Catherine Anne and John Paul Lavallee, and many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents, Reinald and Antonia Ortiz de Gallego, and her brothers Reinald and Vitin.
She retired in 1996 from federal civil service with the U.S. Department of Labor where she conducted international training of foreign economists in the collection of economic data.  Prior to that, she was involved in the calculation of the Consumer Price Index.  She began her career working on Operation Bootstrap in Puerto RicoIn retirement she served as a simultaneous translator in Spanish/English for AT&T, and as a certified translator for courts in Maryland.  A long-time parishioner of St. Mary’s in Rockville, she was a member of the Women’s Sodality and frequently participated in charitable efforts contributing her beautiful handicrafts.
Anita graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, and completed her graduate work in economics at Boston College.  An outgoing, brilliant, strong, dignified and passionate woman of grace and boundless creative energy, Anita will forever be missed by her family and friends.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church 6900 River Road Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, June 15 at 10:30 am .  Viewing will be in the Church a half-hour before the funeral Mass at 10:00 am. Interment will immediately follow at Gate of Heaven cemetery.
