On June 11, 2017 Theophanes Solomos, 88, of Silver Spring, Maryland, devoted husband of Pamela Solomos, and dear brother of Spyros (Sophia) Solomos of Chiliomodi, Corinth, Greece. He earned his doctorate at the University of Cambridge, U.K. and was a faculty member for 33 years in the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture at the University of Maryland, College Park, where his field of pedagogy and research was plant biochemistry. He was a member of the American Society of Plant Biologists and the International Society for Horticultural Science, as well as of the American Hellenic Institute, the Hellenic Center and the Hellenic Society Prometheas. He was an energetic supporter of the Greek-Cypriot community in Cyprus, notably in London, U.K. in the mid 1960s, subsequently as a member of the Save Cyprus Council of Southern California 1971 - 1975, and then of the Friends of Cyprus in the Washington Metropolitan 1975 until its demise in 1985.
Viewing was held on June 17, 2017 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the De Vol Funeral Home, 2222 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC. Complimentary valet parking will be provided. Interment took place on June 22, 2017 in Chiliomodi, Corinth, Greece.
Memorial service will be offered on July 16, 2017 at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church at 9am.
