Sharon Connelly Ambrose
passed away the evening of Saturday, April 1st.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Michael W. Ambrose, and her children: Moira Connelly, née Ambrose, with her husband Rich and their four children Kathleen, Allison, Patrick and Nora; Michael Ambrose, Jr. with his wife Frieda Leonard and their three children Declan, Kieran and Brendan; Nelly Ambrose with her husband Vince Tur-Rojas; Peggy Franzen, née Ambrose, and her husband Nick Franzen, and their two children Nicholas and Maddie. She is also survived by her two brothers, Michael Connelly and Terry Connelly, their wives, and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
First elected to the Council of the District of Columbia in 1997, Sharon was twice re-elected, in 1998 and 2002, to represent the citizens of Ward 6, that included portions of all four quadrants of the city, Capitol Hill, and the burgeoning waterfront of today. Sharon and her husband, both natives of Chicago, settled in their Capitol Hill neighborhood in 1967. As they raised their four children, Sharon became actively involved in the life of the community: a PTA President at Brent Elementary School, a founder of the Capitol East Day Care Center, a member of the DC Democratic State Committee, as well as a participant in the Capitol Hill Restoration Society, St. Peter’s Parish and School, and numerous civic projects. Since her retirement in 2007, Sharon continued to serve on the Boards of the Old Naval Hospital Foundation and St. Coletta’s of Greater Washington, and has greatly enjoyed traveling with her husband and spending lots of time with their nine grandchildren.
The receiving of friends will be held on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church (313 Second Street, S.E., Washington, D.C. 20003), followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m.
St. Coletta’s has established a memorial fund in Sharon’s name; donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Sharon Ambrose Memorial Fund at St. Coletta’s at www.stcoletta.org or by check to St. Coletta’s, 1901 Independence Avenue, S.E., Washington, D.C. 20003.
