REV. WILLIAM EDMUND HENKELS
On Friday, January 27, 2017, Rev. William Edmund Henkels, a Benedictine monk of St.
Anselm’s Abbey in Washington, DC, died after a long illness. Born in Dyersville, Iowa in 1924,
he served in the United States Navy during World War II, earned a bachelor’s degree in
aeronautical engineering at Iowa State University after the war, and was in the Naval Reserve
until his honorable discharge in 1952. He subsequently joined the monastic community at St.
Anselm’s, making his first profession of vows in 1954 and being ordained to the priesthood in 1959.
Fr. Edmund was an outstanding classroom teacher in the Abbey school’s math and science
departments and a faithful supporter of the school’s various activities until failing health led to
his retirement from the school in 2008. Since 2011 he resided at Carroll Manor Nursing Home
and was always grateful for those who came to visit him there. In addition to his fellow monks,
he is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Fr. Edmund’s body will be received at
St. Anselm's Abbey Church on Friday, February 3 at 4:00PM, with visitation until 9:00PM. A Mass of Christian
Burial will be celebrated in the Church on Saturday, February 4, at 10:30AM, followed by burial
in the Abbey cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Anselm’s Abbey or St. Anselm’s Abbey School.
