Rev. D. Edwin Devasirvatham completed his earthly journey and was called to his eternal home on July 22, 2020. Born on June 25, 1946, Edwin was the ninth child of ten children born to his parents, Mr. S. Duraisamy (Former Secretary, Church Council of the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church) and Mrs.Thavamani. Even though he grew up in a large family, Edwin was close to his five brothers and four sisters, and enjoyed spending time with his siblings. Edwin completed his education in Arasaradi, Madurai, with degrees in B.Th., B.D. After completing his theological studies, he was commissioned as a Pastoral Candidate on July 14, 1974. Edwin was, as an ordained as a Pastor in the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church (TELC) on September 1, 1977, and started his ministry in Ambattur, Chennai.
On September 27, 1976, Edwin married Mary Kala Pushpam in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, India. God blessed Edwin and Mary with two wonderful children, Jaipaul Agonus (Agin) and Jaseenal (Jena) Thavamani. Edwin was a loving husband, a wonderful father, a dependable brother, a wise mentor, and a good friend. Those who knew him well considered him to be a people person and a talented administrator with great dispute resolution skills. For hobbies, Edwin was an active sportsman who loved to play soccer, badminton and volleyball. He also enjoyed traveling and experiencing new places and things.
Over the course of 36 years, Edwin served as a Pastor in various cities and villages across the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Edwin would often say that out of all the ministries, village/rural ministry was the closest to his heart. He utilized his talents in the areas of social work, Christian education, rural ministry, and children’s ministry. He also served on various committees and missions of TELC. Additionally, Edwin received a scholarship and participated in an Exchange program in South Korea.
Upon retiring as a Pastor in 2012, Edwin relocated with his wife to Maryland (USA) to join his children, who had settled in the United States. On July 22, 2020, while surrounded by his loving family, he peacefully departed into glory.
