Genevieve Whouley Allison
September 13, 1923 – June 21, 2020
On June 21, 2020, died peacefully at home in Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, MD. Genevieve was the eldest of John M and Grace R Whouley’s five children. They lived in Cambridge, MA. She worked for New England Bell, in the early 1940’s when she met her husband John. He was a student at Harvard University working in her father’s restaurant. Their courtship, interrupted by World War II, lasted seven years. They were married on 11 September 1948 and shared 46 wonderful years together raising six children.
Shortly after their wedding Genevieve and John moved to Arlington, VA while John studied at Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law during the day and served on the Capital Police Force in the evenings. Upon completing his Law Degree John accepted a position with the National Security Agency and they relocated to Bethesda, Maryland. Bethesda was their home while stateside from 1950 through 1984. When abroad they resided in Paris, France (4 years), Frankfurt, Germany (2 years) and Ankara, Turkey (2 years). Genevieve ensured every move went smoothly and that her children received the love and care necessary during these transitions. With six children spanning 13 years this was no small feat. She provided each child with the guidance and love needed to be successful during these formative years.
Genevieve and John retired in 1984 and began to split their time between West Harwich, MA and Naples, Florida. They immediately bonded with friends and neighbors in both areas and loved their communities. Her monthly cocktail parties became legendary and all her children have fond memories of being called on to host one as bartender/ chef in charge when they would visit. If a child was visiting, Genevieve was having friends over, as not only did she love to entertain but she also loved to share her family with her friends. She was so proud of each of her children and their families. These parties continued after John’s passing in 1994 through the Fall of 2016. In 2016 Genevieve relocated full time to Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, MD closer to her children but always longing for a reunion with her Spoonbill Lane, Naples Florida or Uncle Wills Lane, West Harwich, MA friends and neighbors.
Genevieve’s passions included her love of family, needlework, bridge, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. When she was no longer able to entertain or play bridge she longed for the next visit from a family member, cousin, niece or nephew. She cherished these visits and loved to share the accomplishments of those who visited with all who would listen. Genevieve is survived by her six children, John JR (Betsy Fitzgerel, deceased), Susan Rothermel (Chuck), Elizabeth Seery (Patrick), Stephen (Jennifer), Phillip (Kathleen) and Linda Hagan (Paul), 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be held at St Mary’s Catholic Parish in Rockville, MD on 01 July 2020 (family only). Her ashes will be interred at Gate of Heaven Cemetery where she will be reunited with her beloved husband John.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to one of the following charities: St Ann’s Center for Children, Youth and Families, 4901 Eastern Ave, Hyattsville, MD 20782 (Attn Sister Mary Bader) or Montgomery Hospice, 1355 Piccard Drive, Suite 100 Rockville, MD 20850.
