Joseph Weaver Buckley

On Tuesday, September 19, 2017, Joseph Weaver Buckley (“Joe”) died at his residence in the Takoma neighborhood of Washington, DC after a long battle with brain cancer.  Joe is survived by his wife, Abena, and two sons, Thomas Joseph and Finnian Kwabena.  Joe is also survived by his parents, Patricia and John; siblings, Matthew, Martha, and Monica; nephews, John, Henry, and Emmanuel; and niece, Emelia.

Joe was born in Washington, DC on August 25, 1979 – he was the second of four children. Born and raised in DC, Joe spent time away to study in Santa Fe, NM, then studied and taught in New York, but returned home and lived in DC until his passing.  He grew up in American University Park, and lived in Columbia Heights, U Street, and Adams Morgan (Plaza West), before settling in Takoma DC with his wife and children.

Joe obtained his Bachelor’s degree from St. John’s College and his Master’s degree from Herbert H. Lehman College in the Bronx, NY.  He developed a great passion for teaching and went on to teach at Mahalia Jackson Middle School in New York City and St. John’s College High School in Washington, DC.  Beginning in 2010, Joe taught mathematics at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, DC, his alma mater.
While teaching at St. John’s College High School, Joe met his wife Abena.  They dated for two years before their engagement in 2010.  Joe was a talented carpenter who maintained a woodworking shop in his home, and, among many other pieces, built furniture, including a dresser for Abena as an engagement gift.  Joe and Abena married in May 2011 and welcomed their first son, Thomas, in June 2013.  Their second son, Finnian, was born in November 2016.  Joe was a devoted husband and loving father who loved spending quiet time at home with his family, while playing music, working on art, or hanging up new plants.
In addition to carpentry, Joe was an avid artist, cyclist, and gardener.  To his parents and siblings, Joe was an optimistic realist, compassionate, and creative.  Among friends, he was known to be genuine and for the phrase, “future more vivid.”  To his students, he instilled a love of mathematics, and left an indelible impression on many.  Joe will be missed greatly by his family, friends, and the many people he touched through his teaching and passions.
A memorial service to celebrate and honor Joe’s life will be held at the Woodrow Wilson High School auditorium on Sunday October 1, 2017 at 1:30pm, with the doors opening at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested plants for Joe’s home garden or donations to the George Washington University Hospital Brain Cancer Support Group (contact Lauren Broschak, at; 2150 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20037; 202-677-6229).  Plants should be sent to De Vol Funeral Home, in care of Joseph and Abena Buckley, located at 2222 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC  20007.
