Janey Dea Cole (age 70) died at her home in Washington D.C. on July 11, 2015 after a long battle against breast cancer. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 8, 1944, the only child of Carman P. Cole and Dorothy Victoria Payne Cole, both immigrants from Canada. Ms. Cole attended New York City public schools and graduated with honors from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. After teaching high school for several years in Monticello, New York, Ms. Cole enrolled at the University of Hawaii's East-West Center in Honolulu, which she described as a "turning point" in her life. At the East-West Center, she concentrated on Chinese Studies, spending several months in intense language study in Taiwan. This experience set her on her future career in international activities and programs. After receiving her master's degree from the University of Hawaii, she then returned to New York to work first for International House and then for the Girl Scouts of America.

In 1980, Ms. Cole joined the U.S. Foreign Service, working for the U.S. Information Agency and later the Department of State. She was first posted to embassies in Dhaka, Bangladesh, then Caracas, Venezuela. Other international assignments included Kathmandu, Nepal, Calcutta, India and Islamabad, Pakistan. During one of her Washington assignments, she worked in the office of New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg. She retired as a member of the Senior Foreign Service in 2003.

Ms. Cole leaves no survivors, but a myriad of devoted friends and friendships she began nurturing from her days in elementary school and never ceased to cherish.

A Celebration and Thanksgiving for her life will be held at St. Columba's Episcopal Church in Washington DC on Tuesday, July 21 at 2:00 pm.
