Dorothea Hammond Capello

Longtime Arena Stage actor, Dorothea Hammond Capello passed away at her home in Georgetown - Washington, DC on Friday April 28, 2017 at 101. She died in the company of her son, Paul J. Hammond. The cause was heart failure. Originally known as Dorothea Jackson, she changed her stage name to Dorothea Hammond after her marriage to actor Paul Hammond. Dorothea Hammond was the only actor to have performed at all four of Arena Stage's theatres starting with the Hippodrome where she played Constance in She Stoops to Conquer, Arena's first production in 1950. She was well known for her roles in The Three Sisters, Skin of Our Teeth, Death of a Salesman, and in particular as Mary Tyrone in Long Day's Journey Into Night. She portrayed Beatrice in the Old Vat's opening production of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge and Madame Raynefskaya in The Cherry Orchard both directed by Alan Schneider. She had leading roles at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Northlight Repertory Theatre in Chicago, and played Dolly opposite Robert Prosky in The Matchmaker at The Delaware Theatre Company and played the title role in the Italian comedy Filumena at the Olney Theatre. Her last performance was in 1999 at Theatre J in Arthur Miller's Danger: Memory! In 1947, Dorothea Hammond was proclaimed the bright new ingenue of the Broadway stage for her role as Winifred in Portrait in Black with Sidney Blackmer. She moved to Washington from New York in 1950 with her first husband, Paul Hammond, also an actor. He died in 1956, and she later married an Italian diplomat, Dr. Oliviero Capello who died in 2006. She divided her time between Washington and Italy.She is survived by her sons, Paul J. Hammond (Alessandra Bosa) and son, Rory Capello.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 11 a.m., at Christ Church Georgetown.
