Zigfridas "Zig" Vaituzis, age 82, passed away on November 19, 2019 at his home in Montgomery Village, MD from lung cancer.  He was born on January 31, 1937 in Pabirze, Lithuania to the late Vytautas Vaituzis and the late Jadvyga Selickas.

Beloved husband of Catherine Vaituzis for almost 28 years.  Loving father of Eric Vaituzis (Valerie), Krista Molino (Marc) and step-son Stephen King (Tamra).  He is survived  by five grandchildren:  Dominic Molino, Madelynn King, Katelynn King, Brice King, Cameron King and many nieces and nephews.  His previous marriage to Linda Rosen ended in divorce.  His brother Ray Vaituzis predeceased him. 

Zig was a World War II refugee having fled Lithuania to Germany with his brother and father to escape the Nazis and Russians.  The family lived in a Displaced Persons camp until 1949 when they came to the United States and settled in Connecticut.

Zig worked nights to put himself through college earning a Bachelor’s of Science  degree in Microbiology from the University of Connecticut.  He joined the Army and was stationed at Walter Reed Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.  After the Army, Zig again worked nights to finance his education at the University of Maryland where he earned a Master’s degree and a Ph.D.

Zig taught Pathogenic Microbiology at the University of Maryland for 10 years.  He became Chief of Bacteriology at Doctor’s Hospital and then at the National Health Lab.  In 1985 Zig joined the Environmental Protection Agency as a Senior Scientist in the Biological Pesticide Department.  He retired from the EPA in 2011.

The guiding force in Zig’s Life has always been his deep faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.  He has been a member of Mother of God Charismatic Community since 1983 and was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church. 

Friends may call at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 9000 Warfield Road, Gaithersburg, Maryland 20882 on Friday, November 22, 2019 from 11 a.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial  being celebrated at 12 p.m. (Noon).  Interment will follow in All Souls Cemetery, Germantown, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Mother of God School, 20501 Goshen Road, Gaithersburg, MD 20879.
