Walter Schneider Harner, 90, of Potomac, MD, passed away on September 23, 2018. Born in Quakertown, PA, to the late Raymond and Elsie Harner. In high school he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He spent summers working with horses at several racetracks. Walter served in the Merchant Marines during the latter part of World War II. He served in both the U.S.A.F. and the U.S. Army Signal Corps during the Korean War. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Penn State University, Walter spent his career working for I.B.M. Walter was most proud of the many years he spent as an ‘IBMer’ working closely with N.A.S.A on the U.S. Manned Space Programs, from the Mercury Project up through the Space Shuttle Program. Walter was awarded the NASA Exceptional Public Service Medal for these efforts. In the course of his career he traveled the world to install IBM systems, including the first 911 system in New York City and some of the first automated banking systems in Japan and Europe.
In his spare time, he was an avid tennis player and in retirement, a solid golfer. He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Joann Gracey Harner. Loving father of Steven Harner (Emily) and Lynn Edwards (Gene); beloved grandfather of Marshall Harner and Avery Harner; cherished brother of Lynn Schueck.
Memorial visitation to be held Saturday, October 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 E. Deer Park Dr., Gaithersburg, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Montgomery County Humane Society.
