Tom Mullikin, age 90, died peacefully in his sleep on November 24, 2018. Tom was born in Flintville, Tennessee to Houston Yost and Daisy Copeland Mullikin. He attended The University of the South in Sewanee and graduated with a BS in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee. He joined the Naval Reserves in 1948 and was called to active duty in the Navy in 1950. He met the love of his life, Mildred (Mickey) Sugg of Kinston, North Carolina while he was stationed in Washington DC. They married in June, 1952 and shared 66 happy years together. Tom received his master’s degree from Iowa State University. He was then awarded a National Science Foundation Grant to attend Harvard, where he earned his PhD in applied mathematics under Garrett Birkhoff in 1958. He spent seven years with the RAND Corporation in Los Angeles, California, and in June of 1964 he accepted a full professorship in mathematics at Purdue University. He taught and conducted research at Purdue until 1991, when he became Dean of the Graduate School. Tom retired in 1993, and he and Mickey moved to the North Carolina coast.
In retirement, Tom volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, building houses and heading up a small-projects team of volunteers. His true passion was woodworking; he built furniture, clocks, and made intricate, lathe-turned bowls. He was a devoted husband and father and is survived by his wife, Mickey Mullikin, daughter Sarah V Mullikin, son Thomas W Mullikin, Jr. and wife Carla, youngest son, James C Mullikin and wife Liz, and four grandchildren, Ryan Patrick Mullikin, Thomas Isaac Busick, Kelsey Taylor Mullikin, and Andrew Carter Mullikin. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at the Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church, 100 Yaupon Drive, Cape Carteret, North Carolina, on Friday, November 30, at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity.
