ERCEG MAUREEN ANN (Age 85):  On May 9, Maureen died peacefully at her home in Gaithersburg, Maryland.  Maureen is survived by her brother Charles  Pierson; three children, Christopher Erceg (Susan Murray), Caroline Barksdale (Gayland Barksdale), and James Erceg (Monica Erceg); and five grandchildren (Allison, Katherine, Emma, Brendan, and James).  She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, John Erceg, and by two brothers, Edward and William.

Maureen earned her Bachelor of Science at Case Western Reserve University, and then worked as a nurse at University Hospitals of Cleveland.  After taking a break to raise her young children, she returned to nursing as a school nurse at her children’s elementary school (Gesu).  Her career was well-suited for her outgoing personality, concern for others, and lifelong interest in medicine and health.  In her recreation time, she loved playing the piano, and was an active member of the Fortnightly Musical Club of Cleveland.  Her impromptu performances -- ranging from Mozart to 1940s hits -- were always a high point of family gatherings.

Maureen was a devoted wife to her husband John, as well as a loving mother and grandmother.  She adored her family and relished hosting them on their frequent visits to her longtime home in Hudson, Ohio.  Maureen conveyed warmth, wisdom, and Irish wit throughout her life.  She was an optimist to the core, with much faith in human goodness and complete faith in God’s love.  She always put the needs of others first, and there was no sacrifice that she wouldn’t make for her family.  Her family and many friends will miss her greatly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rockville, MD, at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 14.   In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Holy Cross Hospice, 10720 Columbia Pike, 2nd floor, Silver Spring, MD, or online at: (include “in honor of Maureen Erceg”).
