Kathleen Wellington, former Director of Culinary for all Marriott Select Brands passed away quietly at her home on Thursday morning after a 2 ½ year battle with cancer. During her 32-year culinary career with Marriott International, she held many culinary positions which spanned across six hotels where she was the opening Executive Banquet Chef at the Philadelphia Downtown Marriott, Executive Chef at New York East Side and the Bethesda Pooks Hill Marriott. Kathleen was the first woman executive chef in New York City for Marriott International. Most notably while at Marriott International’s Headquarters, Kathleen led the development and sustainment of “The Bistro” for over 900 Courtyard hotels, which changed the food and beverage landscape of the brand. In addition, she was also responsible for all the culinary concepts which were implemented in the Fairfield Inn, SpringHill Suites, Residence Inn and the Towne Pace Suites brands.
During Kathleen’s spare time, she was highly motivated in championing women chef career paths and giving her time to help support numerous humanitarian organizations such as DC Central Kitchen, Manna Food Bank, and Red Wiggler Farm for their annual Field to Fork event.
Kathleen was not only a loyal and motivated chef; she was also a wonderful person who always put others first. She will be missed and we are so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with her over these many years.
Services will be held this coming Tuesday, Nov. 12th from 10:30 to noon at DeVol Funeral located at 10 East Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, MD, 20877.
