Location: Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church
Passed away at Suburban Hospital with her loved ones by her side on Sun., May 28, 2017. She is survived by her beloved husband Craig E.R. Jakubowics; son Stephan; daughter Emily; three siblings: Michael, Matthew, and Elizabeth Nolan; as well as many family members. Predeceased by her parents John S. and Adeline J. Nolan and her brother John Nolan. Born in Bethesda, MD at the Naval Hospital, Joyce loved Washington, D.C. and the surrounding metro area. She attended Little Flower Elementary School, Ursuline Academy, Connelly School of the Holy Child (where she made a number of lifelong friends), and headed north to Boston College in 1972 where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. There she met the love of her life, Craig, at the age of 19. Joyce moved back to Maryland where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy at the University of Maryland in Baltimore in 1979. Joyce and Craig were married in 1980. Her life after graduating brought many more friendships as she began her work as a PT at Doctors Hospital in Prince George's County, MD, and the birth of her two children. In 1988, Joyce moved back to the Boston area and lived with her family for 11 years in Upton, MA. She spent countless days skiing and swimming at her family's cabin in Maine, continuing her work as a PT in Southborough, MA, carving pumpkins every Halloween, hiking trails all over New England, and cooking just about every recipe from Mastering the Art of French Cooking. In 1998, Joyce returned to her home state when the family relocated to Darnestown, MD. She continued her career at several places, most recently Manor Care Nursing Home in Potomac. Joyce loved connecting with her patients and learning their stories. She was active in her community, too – joining a neighborhood book club, frequenting Holy Child Alumnae events, and walking the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal just about every day with her labradors. She will be dearly missed by all her family and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Sat., June 3, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Potomac, MD.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Joyce's name to the C&O Canal Trust: www.canaltrust.org/support/.
