Jeffrey Hugh Fischer, PhD, age 52, died of cancer at his home in Germantown, MD, on Nov. 19, 2018. Dr. Fischer is survived by his wife of over 32 years, Melissa, parents Olga Fischer and Hugh Fischer, stepmother Shirley Fischer, uncle Joseph Fischer Jr., sister Karen Wheatley, nephews Justin and Tyler Wheatley, and numerous cousins. He is also survived by in-laws Anne and Steven Harrison Sr., Sharon and Steven Harrison Jr., Virginia Harrison, Rachel Harrison, Megan Evans, and Zach Evans.
Born in Seaford, DE, Dr. Fischer graduated from Brandywine High School in Wilmington, DE, where he and his wife met while working on the school newspaper and marching in the band. He received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania, followed by an MA and a PhD in Economics from the Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Fischer joined the Federal Trade Commission in 1992, serving as a staff economist for the Bureau of Economics before becoming a Deputy Assistant Director in 1995. He co-authored articles on competition issues for Rand Journal of Economics, Energy Journal, International Journal of the Economics of Business, and Supreme Court Economic Review, among others. Dr. Fischer received the FTC awards of Outstanding Scholarship, Excellence in Economics, and Excellence in Supervision. He contributed to well over 100 investigations and studies involving a wide spectrum of the economy including tobacco, petroleum, manufacturing, and hi-tech industries.
Dr. Fischer enjoyed traveling, cruises, Apple products, fine Scotch, writing short stories, Dr. Who, collecting fountain pens, reading, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and music. A private service was held on Nov 21. Memorial contributions may be made to Warrior Canine Connection or Young America’s Foundation.
