Ewe-Ghee Lim was born on September 14, 1953 in Penang, and departed on December 11, 2018, at the age of 65. He was the third of six children born to the late Mr. Teik Seng Lim and Madam Guat Eng Ong. When he was a young boy, he looked forward to visits at his grandmother’s house, preferred trishaw rides over walking, and enjoyed eating hawker foods such as Hae Mee, Assam Laksa, Ais Kachang. Like many teenagers in his days, he enjoyed hanging out with his friends, watched Chinese sword fighting movies starred by Ti Lung and David Chiang, and finally achieved his dream to study in the US after completing high school.
Ewe Ghee was a graduate of Yale University and the University of California, Davis, USA. He served as senior economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Washington, DC, for 23 years. Later, he was attached at the Faculty of Economics, University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, as senior research fellow. He met and married his ex-wife, Bee Peng Pang, and had their first and only child, Michael, in Singapore. Ewe-Ghee loved spending time with Michael, whether watching sports, playing Chinese chess, or helping with schoolwork. His other hobbies included listening to news and politics, trying to recreate the distinctive tastes he enjoyed while growing up in Penang, and, for those who knew him simply thinking. He made his family most proud with his valiance and gave his family the greatest joy in his faith. In October of this year, Ewe-Ghee declared Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and was baptized on November 24, 2018, at home.
In September 2017, Ewe-Ghee began a long, grueling battle with pancreatic cancer. His fighting spirit and will to overcome any and all challenges never wavered until the end. Though he may have met his match here on earth, we know that his spirit will never be defeated. After fighting the illness for nearly 15 months, on December 11, 2018, Ewe-Ghee departed to be with Christ, passing away peacefully at home, with Bee Peng and Michael at his side.
Besides Bee Peng and Michael, he is survived by his mother, Guat Eng, siblings and their spouses: late Eu Yim (Sow Yoong), Yu Ai (Ang), Eng Wah, Beng Wah (Bon Hock) and Luan Wah (Kit Keng), and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Teik Seng and brother, Eu Yim.
